Feeling of Touch

Αφή Υφής

During the years of Covid, among those two endless winters, life and death became the two steps of the same dance. Locked at home, I opened the closets to relive my carefree past unravelling my unworn for years clothes. I was wondering if I could use some of them to bridge my past with the unknown future.

Looking at them, I cherished the past moments full of happiness and success. Memories sparkled in front of my eyes like the shining clothes. It would be an insult to wear them again now, I thought and under which circumstances, I wondered. It felt like I was wrapped around my precious youthful past with no clue what the future held for me.

My mind went to the beautiful mythical women of my last series of sculptures. I remembered my one and only doll from my childhood that I used to sew little dresses for her all by myself from pieces of cloth given by the seamstress. And then my imagination took over to choose, to design, to cut and to sew.

At first I envisioned the heavy metal lifelike statues wrapped into luxurious tissues, both men and women -why not?- from the Greek mythology. Then, helped by a talented seamstress, we started cutting, sewing and adorning the statues; touch of silk on the hard cold forged metal. Somehow like that, the series Feeling of Touch was born.
